The Problem: The Cancer Infusion areas have too many overbooks (definition in background), leading to delays in treatment for patients and schedules over-capacity during peak hours of operation.
Our analysis required a deep dive into the five whys:
The analysis helped us generate the following key drivers:
Project Results:
We were able to decrease the number of overbooks per day by 19%.
Reflection:
There were several things that lead to our team’s success. First, our team was invested and dedicated to achieving this single goal. We also had a multidisciplinary group that allowed us to view the process through different lenses. Overall, our team was very successful with our interventions because they were founded on our analysis. And the way our team set up structured touch points for communication helped with shared accountability.
Though our team was successful, we did hit some roadblocks. We were slow to implement some interventions. It was also challenging to balance the user experience with the necessary improvement in outcome. And finally, ensuring all the stakeholders were in the room when making decisions was challenging to coordinate.
There were several things we wish we had known prior to starting this cohort. It was surprising the speed at which we were able to transition from analysis to intervention. We ended up making some big assumptions prior to testing! The cohort also was definitely more involved than we had initially thought. And making changes to processes can be really tough, especially those that required IT support.
