Stuck in the System: Improving the Care, and Care Progression, of Complex Inpatient

November 28th, 2023

As hospitals are increasing capacity constrained due to both surging demand and staffing shortages, strong bed stewardship is paramount. Paradoxically, rising numbers of inpatients find themselves “stuck” in acute care due to complex social, medical, and financial barriers. This leads to frustration on the part of patients, clinicians, and hospital administrators, and presents a low-value dilemma to all stakeholders. Our session will address the commonality of this problem, drivers, and potential solutions.

Paul W. Helgerson

Dr. Paul Helgerson is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia and serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer and the Vice Chair for the Department of Medicine (in both roles focusing on acute care operations). He has practiced hospital medicine for over 15 years and previously served as the Section Head of Hospital Medicine at UVA. He has been recognized for excellence in clinical care and teaching within the School of Medicine. Dr. Helgerson obtained his medical degree from Georgetown University, and did residency training in Internal Medicine at Stanford, including a tenure as Chief Resident in medicine in 2004-2005. Areas of focused scholarship include issues related to the care of complex patients that drive excess inpatient utilization.
