Behind the Screens: Using EHR Metadata to Improve Provider Well-being and Patient Safety

This session will introduce the world of EHR metadata and its emerging role supporting research and quality improvement, with an emphasis on patient safety applications. Through real-world examples, this presentation will demonstrate how EHR metadata can predict markers of physician well-being and generate large-scale insights surrounding prescribing errors, informing approaches to improving both provider well-being and patient safety.

Daniel Tawfik, MD, MS

Dr. Daniel Tawfik is an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Clinical Informatics. He completed medical school at the University of Iowa, pediatric residency at the University of Utah, pediatric critical care fellowship at Stanford University, and a master’s degree in health policy and research at Stanford University. He co-leads the Context-Driven Assessment & Informatics Lab at Stanford, where he focuses on applying advanced quantitative methodology to improve our understanding of the healthcare delivery system, predicting healthcare provider and patient safety outcomes using routinely generated EHR data and metadata
