A Review of Improvement Training Offerings at Stanford Health Care

This talk will provide a concise overview of Stanford Health Care’s improvement training offerings designed to build improvement capability across internal staff , providers, and external participants. We will describe each program, from foundational training to advanced leadership development, highlighting how they diff er in scope, length, and learning methods. Audience fit for these courses ranges from frontline staff seeking practical problem-solving to clinicians pursuing system-level change. We will explain how to apply the training to real-world improvement projects: selecting the right program, framing aims, engaging stakeholders, using data, and realizing the needed improvements.

Jake Michelson, MBA

Jake Michelson is the Director of Improvement Capability at Stanford Healthcare and a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health. He is a certified improvement practitioner with experience building healthcare operational excellence across the globe. His teaching and coaching have served major institutions such as Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Kansas Medical Center, the All India Institute for Medical Sciences in New Delhi, and AIC Kijabe hospital in Kenya. Through these experiences he has coached hundreds of health care teams and co-authored diverse articles in medical journals.

Outside of his role as director at Stanford Health Care, he serves as a faculty fellow for the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health where he directs global learning collaboratives for hospitals in low- and middle-income countries on topics of patient safety, access, and clinical effectiveness, which he has been doing since 2017.
